North East Green Party

New local Green Parties, and a Transition Town launch

23 October 2009

The Greens are going places in the North East, with Sunderland, Gateshead and Durham all set to have launched local parties within a few weeks of each other. Building on a boost in support at the European Parliament elections in June, North East Greens are becoming a real alternative in communities across the region.

Sunderland Green Party is up and running and ready to break the mould of Wearside politics. Gateshead Green Party held its inaugural meeting on Thursday 22 October and looks set to make a splash on the banks of the Tyne with a set of important campaigns and much-needed fresh policies for a borough that's being badly let down by Labour. Soon, Durham too will have an active Green presence able to step outside the Labour–Lib Dem squabbles and offer its people a long-overdue alternative.

But it's not just in the Green Party that exciting things are afoot. Community and environmental groups like the Transition Towns movement are on the up too, with South of the Tyne Transition Town having got off the ground with a promising first meeting on Saturday 10 October. Originally imagined as covering the area around Hebburn, Jarrow, South Shields and Boldon, the new group found itself with interest from further afield as well, and will be working for a just transition to the low-carbon world of the future both in and around the borough of South Tyneside. The Transition phenomenon is a great example of people getting together to take their communities in a new direction, and an important reminder that change doesn't just come through the ballot box.

Now is the perfect time for supporters to get involved in the Green Party, wherever you are in the region. Our local parties will benefit from any help you can offer, and if there is nothing organised in your area yet, getting in touch will allow us to put you in contact with other members and supporters nearby. If recent developments are anything to go by, it might not be long before your community has its own Green voice!

Keeping an eye on our events diary is a great way to stay informed about what's happening around the region, whether it's local party meetings or events from other groups like the Transition Towns that we think you might like to hear about.
