NE Green vote ‘steady’

06 June 2009

Our best results were in Newcastle (7.5%), Northumberland (6.9%) and Darlington (6.1%).

In North Tyneside, mayoral candidate Martin Collins polled 2,000 1st choice votes, and about twice that in 2nd choice votes - while over 3,000 North Tynesider voted Green in the Euroelection. And in Hartlepool, Iris Ryder polled 594 votes in the mayoral contest and we got 943 votes in the Euros.

We are going to need to explain the ‘two-vote' system used in the mayoral election better next time - but basically the first vote is for who you want to win and the second vote is who you would settle for.

Thanks to everyone who voted Green - it is a good habit to get into. So - look out on this website for information about our candidates for the General Election and for local elections in Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear next May.

Oh - and in case you missed it: nationally, we did very well increasing our share of the vote to 9%, both our existing MEPs got re-elected on increased votes and we narrowly missed out on getting people elected in the North West and East of England.
