North East Green Party

Shirley Ford, Green Party lead Euro-candidate said:
"As terrible as the recession is - climate change is a bigger threat. So, we are looking for a ‘Green New Deal' which not only kick-starts the economic recovery - but sets us on the way towards a low carbon economy.

"We estimate that our proposals for a Green New Deal could create nearly 43,000 jobs in the North East."

"For a start, 3,500 jobs could be created in waste management if we started treating our waste as a resource to be used rather than something to be buried or burnt."

Iris Ryder, Green Party Mayoral candidate for Hartlepool, and second Euro-candidate, added:

"And, over 3,000 of these jobs could be in large scale or micro renewables with a further 3,500 in a programme proving free insulation for all homes, schools and hospitals. Energy efficiency measures will not only save money but will reduce the need for a new nuclear power station at Hartlepool

"In the longer term, One North East are predicting tens of thousands of jobs for the region from off shore wind energy. We need investment in this, not in nuclear power."

Martin Collins, Green Mayoral candidate for North Tyneside added:

"And nearly 4,000 jobs could be created by investment in public transport - giving us more and better buses, a better local rail network and cheaper fares."

"And there'd be no need to privatise the Metro either"

Shirley Ford concluded:

"We don't want to re-create the consumer-led credit boom that got us into this mess. The Green New Deal will create the sort of jobs that we need to have to reduce our carbon emissions - and give us the sort of economic recovery we need."
